ABOUT OUR UNIVERSITY

Constituent Universities

Much has changed in UP over the past 100 years. From one campus in Manila, it now has eight constituent universities in 17 campuses all over the country; it has 258 undergraduate programs; and 438 graduate programs with students from almost every region in the country.

On April 29, 2008, President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo signed the new UP Charter or Republic Act 9500. Efforts for the enactment of a new UP Charter go back to the term of UP President Edgardo Angara and were further studied during the term of UP President Jose Abueva. With the new mandate, the university faces the challenges of the 21st century by continuously exercising its distinctive leadership in higher education and development.

From the education of ordinary Filipinos under Americans at the time of UP President Bartlett to its journey onto another century under the stewardship of President Danilo Lardizabal Concepcion, the university has produced at least 37 National Scientists; at least 39 National Artists; 7 out of the 16 Presidents of the Republic; 13 Chief Justices of the Supreme Court; at least 15,000 doctors; 8,000 lawyers; 15,000 engineers; 23,000 teachers and hundreds of thousands of graduates in other academic fields.

About UP Mindanao

On 20 February 1995, President Fidel V. Ramos signed into law Republic Act 7889, “An Act Creating the University of Philippines in Mindanao,” after many years of lobbying by alumni and with support from Mindanawon lawmakers.

By virtue of this law, UP Mindanao became the sixth constituent university of the UP System and was mandated to offer academic programs “on science, technology and agricultural education,” “provide a special scholarship program and other affirmative action programs to assist poor but deserving Muslims and other members of cultural communities to qualify for admission to the university,” and “network and collaborate with other stage college and universities in such areas which shall contribute to the development of the Mindanao.”

Since it opened its doors in 1996, the university has graduated a number of students across the various degree programs offered by the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, College of Science and Mathematics, and School of Management. These graduates are now serving as public officials and civil servants, writers and communicators, lawyers, doctors, educators, entrepreneurs, and professionals, making a mark in government, industry, and civil societies.

Beginning with only 4 undergraduate degrees, 2 graduate programs, and 3 non-degree courses, the university is now crafting more undergraduate and graduate degree programs and offering relevant research and public service for the development of Mindanao.
