Food and Drug Administration offers collaboration with UPMin for public service

Chancellor Lyre Anni Murao and the College of Science and Mathematics team welcomed the offer of collaboration from Food and Drugs Administration Deputy Director General Jesusa Joyce Cirunay in a visit on January 23, 2025. Deputy Cirunay was accompanied by an FDA-XI team composed of Mindanao East Cluster Director Deborah S. Legaspi and Food-Drug Regulation Officers Eba Marie Antonette W. Inis and Phyllis Irene P. Blaquera. The collaboration offers ranged from academic program improvement, laboratory accreditation, facility capacity and personnel capability improvement, and service to the micro-, small–, medium– enterprise (MSME) sectors. Chancellor Murao expressed interest in the FDA plans and offered to house such a facility in the upcoming UP Mindanao Knowledge Innovation Science & Technology (KIST) Park. Director Legaspi pledged to send a draft of their standard agreement for the chancellor’s review as soon as possible.

The FDA team likewise met with the College of Science and Mathematics dean, Professor Cleto Nañola Jr., and the Department of Food Science and Chemistry chairperson, Assoc. Prof. Dann Marie del Mundo. Director Legaspi reiterated the FDA’s collaboration offer, and Deputy Cirunay emphasized the opportunity for academic program improvement through a food and drug jurisprudence course. Dean Nañola and Chair del Mundo welcomed the opportunities for collaboration and expressed their desire to sign an agreement as soon as possible.

The prospective collaboration will address the UP flagship programs on academic excellence, partnerships, innovation hubs, and public service.
