PCAARRD team visits funded projects in UPMin

UP Mindanao research program leaders welcomed the Institution Development Division staff from the Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic, and Natural Resources Research and Development (PCAARD) on January 23, 2025. The team of Engr. Ruel Carlo L. Tanqueco, Engr. Wilmar J. Lastimosa, Mr. Sherwin R. de los Reyes, and Mr. Victor P. Alcantara were on campus for a site visit, monitoring and evaluation, and equipment tagging for four PCAARRD-funded projects.

Mr. Michael R. Bonghanoy, OIC of the Office of Research (OR), welcomed the PCAARRD team at the Center for the Advancement of Research in Mindanao (CARIM) Building. They toured the building and were briefed on its various research center facilities in the final stages of construction. At the OR, Assoc. Prof. Giovanna Fae R. Oguis, project leader, and her staff gave updates on their PCAARRD-funded project, “Establishing and Operationalizing the Agri-Aqua Value Chain (AAVC) Laboratory in UP Mindanao: Coffee, Cacao, and Cavendish Bananas,” and presented their project equipment for inspection.

At the College of Science and Mathematics, Prof. Cleto L. Nañola Jr., dean and project leader for “Facility Upgrade of the Coral Reef Resiliency and Ecology Studies (CRREST) Laboratory of the College of Science and Mathematics (CSM), University of the Philippines Mindanao,” welcomed the PCAARRD team. The PCAARRD team sought out and photographed the equipment on their list. These included specialized underwater breathing apparatus, cameras, water sampling containers, and standard lab equipment. They likewise toured the lab facility and construction status. Engr. Tanqueco advised Prof. Nañola to submit a scientific facility and scientist development road map to mobilize DOST’s continuing support.

Next, the PCAARRD visited the completed project, “Mass propagation and pilot utilization of plumule-derived plantlets of Tall and Dwarf coconut varieties through somatic embryogenesis Davao Region,” in the facility commonly called the CSET lab, formerly led by Prof. Annabelle U. Novero. The team did a brief survey of the facility.

Finally, the PCAARRD team visited the School of Management’s “Annotated Compendium of Gender and Development Research in Agriculture, Aquatic, and Natural Resource (AANR): Towards Developing the AANR Gender and Development Research and Development Agenda and Framework” with Assoc. Prof. Glory Dee A. Romo, as project leader. Asst. Prof. Rodgessa Lopez received and briefed the PCAARRD team on behalf of Prof. Romo.

These completed and ongoing projects serve the UP Flagship Programs on Academic Excellence, Research, Partnerships, and Public Service. These projects likewise address the sustainable development goals of quality education, gender equality, economic growth, life on land, life below water, and partnerships for the goals.
