“Supporting Our Queer Friends and Family Members” online forum held

The spectrum of support that every person needs, more so for queer persons and the challenges they encounter in daily life, was brought up and discussed in the UP Mindanao forum “Supporting Our Queer Friends and Family Members,” held online on November 25, 2024.

Instructor Maria Gliceria L. Valdez, coordinator of the UP Mindanao Office of Anti-Sexual Harassment, discussed the status of the Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity/Expression (SOGIE) Equality Bill and the ongoing challenges that the bill faces in the legislative process in her talk titled “SOGIE Equality Bill: Where Are We Now After 24 Years?”

Ms. Claudine Faye M. Tecson, manager of the UP Diliman Psychosocial Services Clinic, presented alternative ways and means of providing support to these individuals in her talk, “Providing Affirmative Support to our LGBTQIA+ Families and Friends.”  Ms. Tecson concluded her talk by introducing the ‘BESH IE Skills’ method—a practical and mindful approach to checking in and supporting individuals facing challenges due to gender identity or expression.

Following the talks, Francis Carlo Cajano, a second-year BS Data Science student and member of the UP Mindanao Mentefuwaley, and University Researcher Marilou O. Montiflor of the School of Management and former UP Mindanao Gender and Development coordinator shared their reflections and feedback on the discussions.

The forum was organized by the UP Mindanao Gender and Development Office and moderated by Ms.KC Ann Neljane Abella of the Public Relations Unit. UP Mindanao students, faculty, and staff who attended actively participated in the discussions.

The forum concluded with a dynamic and insightful exchange between the speakers and participants, fostering a deeper understanding and commitment to supporting the LGBTQIA+ community.

“Life can be challenging, and we all need support from time to time—whether it’s offering a listening ear, providing practical help, or simply being there for our loved ones. This forum is designed to explore how we can strengthen our relationships and be better supporters to those who matter most. This is an open, safe space where we can share ideas, learn from each other, and make a positive impact on the lives of those around us. We encourage everyone—friends, family members, and caregivers alike—to join us in this important conversation.”
